DAVIS BREAKS RECORD
Jason Davis (9) becomes the Giants All-Time Reception Leader
Milford, CT - Consistency. That’s the best word that best describe the recently crowned All-Time Reception leader for the Connecticut Giants. Jason Davis recently surpassed former Denver Bronco and Minor League great Elijah Shamba reception record of 242 career catches.
Since his start in 2001, Davis has had to recreate himself multiple times as a receiver. As a rookie he battled for playing time with established veterans Shamba and Marvin Perkins. In trying to get him on the field, Davis was used as a part time reviver but more interestingly as a defensive back and punt returner. “If the team needed a big play we put Jason in the game” said Head Coach Tim Andrews, “he had a habit of making a big play whenever it was needed”.
In time he progressed into an every down receiver for All-Time passing leader Craig Dobson. “During that time Jason was doing everything off of raw ability,” said captain Marlon Blackwood; “ he was definitely our go-to guy”. Although very productive during this time, Davis experienced a few nagging injuries that held back his full potential.
The acquisition of Dialo Freeman and Raheem Duncan regulated Davis to a situation receiver in the Trond Fletcher offensive system. Although he saw the field less, he pulled in more third down receptions than anyone on the team. “ I had to play my role, I did what was best for the team” stated Davis. As his individual numbers grew so did the success of the Giants winning two Minor League Super Bowls over a three year period.
Now in 2008 Davis is once again the focal point in the passing attack. With 13 catches in the fist three regular season games, he is off to his best start since 2003 (38 catches). “Now I just let the game come to me, I don’t worry about anything except getting open and catching the ball”.
Davis is viewed as more of a physical receiver than the speedster he was in earlier years. “ Over time I had to focus on the fundamentals of the game. I am better football player now and I feel good with my progression”. The record is that of longevity. “I’ve caught passes from six different quarterbacks during my career, Rich (Snowden) and I have a good thing going together.” Said Davis.
The next milestone in Davis’s path is the receiving touchdowns (needs 8) and yardage (needs 430 yards) records held by the before mentioned Perkins. “ If I stay healthy and continue to be surrounded by great talent I’ll catch him” said Davis, “consistency is the key”.
